Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most challenging and rewarding off-the-beaten-path adventures. It circles the entire Dhaulagiri massif (8,167 m – seventh-highest peak), crossing two high passes: French Pass (5,360 m) and Dhampus Pass (5,244 m). This remote route takes you through remote valleys, traditional Magar and Thakali villages, dense rhododendron forests, high alpine meadows, glacial moraines, and stark high-desert landscapes, with epic views of Dhaulagiri I, Dhaulagiri II, Tukche Ri, and the Dhaulagiri Glacier.

It’s a true wilderness trek with solitude, raw mountain scenery, and a sense of real achievement ideal for experienced trekkers looking for something tougher and less crowded than the Annapurna Circuit.

Detailed itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, the remainder of the day is free to rest and recover from international travel. Kathmandu offers a fascinating blend of ancient temples, vibrant streets, and mountain culture.

Today is dedicated to final expedition preparations. A comprehensive briefing will be conducted covering the trekking route, high-pass crossings, safety procedures, and daily logistics. Our guides will assist with a detailed equipment inspection to ensure all personal and technical gear meets expedition requirements. Time is available for last-minute purchases or rentals.

Take a scenic morning flight to Pokhara with panoramic Himalayan views, followed by a drive to Beni, the starting point of the trek. The journey passes through fertile valleys and traditional villages along the Kali Gandaki River. Beni is a bustling town that marks the gateway to the remote Dhaulagiri region.

Begin trekking along riverbanks and cultivated farmlands, following gentle trails through subtropical forests. The terrain is relatively easy, allowing the body to adjust gradually. Babia Chaur is a peaceful riverside campsite surrounded by forested hills, offering a relaxed first trekking day.

The trail continues through lush jungle, crossing suspension bridges and narrow gorges carved by glacial rivers. The path becomes more remote as you enter deeper into the Myagdi Valley. Dobang is set within dense forest and marks a transition toward alpine terrain.

Ascending steadily, the trail passes waterfalls, moss-covered cliffs, and mixed forests of bamboo, pine, and oak. As altitude increases, temperatures begin to cool and views become more dramatic. Chitre offers a scenic campsite surrounded by rugged terrain and towering slopes.

Today’s route follows the Myagdi Khola through narrow valleys and rocky sections. The landscape gradually opens, revealing impressive mountain walls and glacial streams. Bhagarchaap provides a sheltered campsite with stunning views and a sense of deep wilderness.

The trail climbs through alpine forest and exposed sections with dramatic scenery. As vegetation thins, the surrounding peaks feel closer and more imposing. Dharapani is an important stop before entering the higher and more technical sections of the Dhaulagiri Circuit.

Continue trekking along a rugged trail beside glacial rivers and rocky terrain. The valley narrows and the environment becomes increasingly alpine. Thapa Khola is a remote campsite situated beneath steep mountain slopes, offering a true expedition atmosphere.

A steady ascent brings you into high alpine terrain with panoramic views of surrounding peaks. The trail requires careful footing in sections as altitude and isolation increase. Upper Chame provides a strategic campsite for acclimatization and rest before entering the glacier zone.

Today’s trek leads into a dramatic glacial valley beneath towering Himalayan giants. The terrain becomes more rugged, with moraine crossings and open alpine landscapes. Depending on conditions, camp is set at Bagagaun or higher at Ghorepani, offering spectacular views of Dhaulagiri and surrounding peaks.

A challenging ascent through glacial moraine and rocky terrain brings you closer to the heart of the Dhaulagiri massif. The environment is stark, cold, and breathtakingly remote. Dobang is a high-altitude campsite beneath massive icefalls, serving as a base for the French Pass crossing.

An early alpine start is essential for crossing French Pass, the highest point of the expedition. The climb rewards you with extraordinary panoramic views of Dhaulagiri I, Tukuche Peak, and the Mukut Himal range. After reaching the pass, descend carefully back to Dobang. A long, demanding but unforgettable day.

Descend from the high alpine zone into the arid landscapes of Mustang. The dramatic transition from glacial terrain to dry trans-Himalayan valleys is striking. Arrive at Marpha, a beautiful traditional village famous for apple orchards and whitewashed houses.

A short and pleasant trek through the Kali Gandaki Valley leads to Jomsom, a major settlement with airstrip access. Enjoy views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri while passing windswept landscapes and traditional villages.

Travel by road through the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge, passing waterfalls, cliffs, and river valleys. Upon arrival in Pokhara, enjoy the comforts of a lakeside city after days in the wilderness.

Return to Kathmandu by scenic flight or overland journey. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy a free evening to relax, shop, or celebrate the successful expedition.

A well-earned rest day in Kathmandu. Optional sightseeing, massage therapy, souvenir shopping, or simply relaxing at the hotel. This day also serves as contingency for weather delays.
