Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek
Located at 4,130 metres, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek leads into a giant circle of rock and snow known as the Annapurna Sanctuary. The name is very old. Local mountain people see this high valley as a holy “Sanctuary,” a place protected by the peaks of the Goddess that feels totally cut off from the rest of the world.
The camp itself sits in the middle of a huge ring of mountains. The rock faces of Annapurna I and Annapurna South rise straight up in every direction, making you feel very small against the high white walls. The route follows the Modi Khola river through dark bamboo woods and narrow valleys before the trail finally opens up into the ice-covered center of the massif. The jagged peak of Machhapuchhre stands right at the start of this high valley, marking the final path into the heart of the range.
For those who want to stand at the base of an 8,000-metre giant, the journey to Annapurna Base Camp remains a classic Himalayan experience.
