Kanchenjunga Expedition (8,586m)

Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak at 8,586 meters, sits on the Nepal-India border in one of the Himalaya’s most remote corners. First climbed in 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band, it remains a serious technical challenge. Our expeditions run 6–8 weeks, tackling routes like the Southwest Face through avalanche zones, glaciers, and brutal ice sections. We provide experienced Sherpa guides, permits, camps, oxygen, and strong safety support to help you reach this sacred summit.

Detailed itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our expedition representative and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, the remainder of the day is free to rest and recover from your international journey or explore the vibrant streets of the city at your leisure. This day allows time to adjust to the local environment and prepare mentally for the Himalayan adventure ahead.

This day is reserved for rest and essential expedition preparations in Kathmandu. While participants recover from travel, our team completes all required permit processing and administrative formalities. A thorough equipment check is conducted to ensure all personal and technical gear meets expedition standards. Final briefings with the expedition leader and support team provide important information on logistics, safety procedures, and the journey ahead.

A morning domestic flight takes you from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur in eastern Nepal. Upon arrival, the journey continues by road through scenic countryside, passing lush tea gardens, rolling hills, and traditional villages. The drive to Ilam offers a peaceful transition from the city to the remote landscapes that characterize the Kanchenjunga region. Overnight in Ilam.

Today’s journey continues by road into the remote eastern Himalayas. The scenic drive follows winding mountain roads through river valleys, terraced hillsides, and traditional villages, offering insight into rural life in eastern Nepal. Upon arrival in Taplejung (Phungling), the gateway to the Kanchenjunga region, the team settles in for the night in preparation for the trekking phase ahead.

The journey continues deeper into the Kanchenjunga region as the road follows rugged mountain terrain and river valleys toward Sekathum. Passing remote villages and forested landscapes, the drive offers a first sense of the region’s isolation and natural beauty. Sekathum marks the starting point of the trek, where the expedition prepares to enter the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.

The trekking phase of the expedition begins today. The trail ascends gradually through dense forest, bamboo groves, and narrow mountain paths, crossing suspension bridges over rushing rivers. This first trekking day introduces the remote and untouched character of the Kanchenjunga region while allowing a steady and comfortable pace for acclimatization. Overnight in the small settlement of Amjilosa.

Today’s trek follows the Ghunsa Khola through forested trails and alpine terrain, gradually gaining altitude. The route passes waterfalls, wooden bridges, and remote settlements, offering a deeper immersion into the pristine environment of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Gyabla, a traditional mountain village, provides a quiet and scenic setting for overnight rest.

The trek continues with a gradual ascent through dense pine and rhododendron forests, following the Ghunsa Khola deeper into the heart of the Kanchenjunga region. Along the way, you pass traditional Tibetan-influenced villages and prayer walls, reflecting the strong Buddhist culture of the area. Ghunsa, the largest settlement in the region, serves as an important trading hub and acclimatization point, offering comfortable lodges and impressive views of the surrounding peaks.

This day is dedicated to proper acclimatization and recovery to ensure a safe ascent into higher elevations. Short acclimatization hikes to nearby ridges or viewpoints are planned, offering panoramic views of surrounding Himalayan peaks while helping your body adjust to the altitude. The remainder of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and exploring the culturally rich village of Ghunsa, interacting with local communities, and preparing for the journey ahead.

Leaving Ghunsa behind, the trail ascends steadily along the lateral moraine of the Kanchenjunga Glacier. The landscape becomes increasingly alpine, with dramatic views of snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys, and rugged terrain. As you approach Khambachen, a high-altitude settlement surrounded by towering mountains, the air grows thinner and cooler. This scenic location provides an ideal environment for continued acclimatization as you move deeper into the remote Kanchenjunga region.

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the high Himalayan wilderness as you follow the trail northward along the Kanchenjunga Glacier. The terrain becomes more stark and dramatic, characterized by vast glacial plains, rocky moraines, and sweeping mountain vistas. Passing through remote alpine landscapes with uninterrupted views of surrounding peaks, you gradually ascend to Lhonak one of the most isolated and pristine high camps in the region. Nestled beneath towering ice walls and expansive glaciers, Lhonak offers a powerful sense of remoteness and serves as a crucial staging point for acclimatization before approaching the North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga.

A vital day dedicated to acclimatization in the stark and majestic surroundings of Lhonak. Short, carefully planned hikes in the surrounding glacial terrain help your body adjust to the increasing altitude while offering spectacular views of Kanchenjunga’s northern face and neighboring peaks. The remainder of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and monitoring health under the guidance of the expedition team. This strategic pause enhances safety and prepares you physically and mentally for the approach to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp and the higher elevations ahead.

Today marks a highlight of the expedition as you trek to Pangpema, the North Base Camp of Mount Kanchenjunga. The route follows the rugged terrain alongside the Kanchenjunga Glacier, offering awe-inspiring views of the immense north face rising dramatically above. Upon reaching Pangpema, you stand at the foot of the world’s third-highest mountain, surrounded by icefalls, seracs, and towering Himalayan giants an unforgettable and humbling experience. After spending time absorbing the grandeur of this sacred place, you retrace your steps back to Pangpema/Lhonak for the night, allowing your body to benefit from time spent at higher altitude while maintaining a safe acclimatization profile.

After days spent at high altitude, today’s descent brings welcome relief as you retrace your route back toward Ghunsa. The trail leads down through glacial valleys and rugged alpine terrain, gradually reintroducing vegetation and warmer air. With improved oxygen levels, the walk feels more comfortable, allowing time to reflect on the remarkable journey to Kanchenjunga’s North Base Camp. Returning to Ghunsa, the cultural heart of the region, you enjoy a well-earned rest in this traditional Tibetan-influenced village, surrounded by prayer flags and mountain vistas.

Today’s trek leads into more remote and less-traveled terrain as you depart Ghunsa and ascend toward the Selele high camp. The trail climbs steadily through alpine landscapes, crossing rugged ridgelines and open slopes with expansive views of surrounding peaks and glaciers. As vegetation thins and the environment becomes increasingly stark, the sense of isolation deepens hallmark of the Kanchenjunga region. Upon reaching Selele, a high-altitude campsite set amidst dramatic mountain scenery, you settle in for the night, preparing for the challenging pass crossing ahead.

An adventurous and rewarding day as you cross the scenic Selele Pass. The ascent is gradual but demanding, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga massif and surrounding Himalayan peaks. Prayer flags mark the high point of the pass, creating a powerful and symbolic moment before the descent. From here, the trail drops steadily into the Yalung Valley, transitioning from stark alpine terrain to gentler landscapes. You arrive in Cheram, a picturesque settlement nestled beneath towering icefalls and glaciers, where you can rest and recover in preparation for the southern approach to Kanchenjunga.

Today’s trek follows the Yalung Glacier deeper into the heart of the Kanchenjunga South region. The trail ascends gradually through expansive alpine meadows and rugged glacial terrain, with spectacular views of Jannu (Kumbhakarna), Kabru, and the surrounding ice-covered peaks. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic and remote. Ramche sits in a wide glacial basin beneath towering mountains and serves as a key acclimatization stop before approaching the South Base Camp. The serene high-altitude setting offers both inspiration and quiet reflection.

A crucial day reserved for rest and acclimatization in the spectacular high-altitude environment of Ramche. Optional exploration hikes toward Yalung Ri or the Oktang viewpoint provide exceptional panoramic views of Kanchenjunga’s towering south face, along with surrounding glaciers and dramatic icefalls. These gentle ascents help your body adapt naturally to the altitude while deepening your connection with this remote Himalayan wilderness. The remainder of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing physically and mentally for the approach to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp and the higher camps ahead.

Today you make your way to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, following a spectacular route along the Yalung Glacier. The trail weaves through rugged glacial terrain and alpine landscapes, with commanding views of towering ice walls, seracs, and the immense south face of Kanchenjunga. Upon arrival at Base Camp, you are surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Himalayas an awe-inspiring setting that underscores the scale and seriousness of the expedition ahead. This remote and pristine camp serves as the operational heart of the climb, where final preparations and acclimatization continue.

These two days are dedicated to essential rest and acclimatization at Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. The time is used to recover from the approach trek, fine-tune personal equipment, and organize climbing gear for the higher camps. Short acclimatization walks around Base Camp help stimulate adaptation while allowing close monitoring of health and physical condition. Team briefings, route discussions, and safety planning take place under the guidance of experienced expedition leaders, ensuring everyone is fully prepared physically, mentally, and logistically for the demanding ascent to the higher camps on Kanchenjunga.

The climbing phase of the expedition begins today as you depart Base Camp and ascend toward Camp I. The route leads across glaciated terrain, requiring careful movement through crevassed sections and snow-covered slopes under the close supervision of the climbing team. As altitude increases, the environment becomes more severe and demanding, with dramatic views of surrounding icefalls and towering Himalayan walls. Reaching Camp I marks a significant milestone, offering valuable acclimatization and the first true taste of life in the high camps above 6,000 meters.

Today’s ascent continues deeper into the high-altitude zone as you climb from Camp I to Camp II. The route follows a combination of snow slopes and glacial sections, demanding steady pacing and disciplined movement in thinner air. As you gain elevation, expansive views of the surrounding peaks and glacier systems unfold, reinforcing the scale of the Kanchenjunga massif. Camp II is strategically positioned to support further acclimatization and route establishment, providing a critical platform for the next phase of the climb toward the upper camps.

Today involves a demanding ascent into more technical terrain as you climb toward the Camp III area. The route steepens, often involving fixed lines across icy sections and exposed snow slopes. Careful movement and efficient climbing are essential as altitude and fatigue increase.
