Upper Dolpo Trek
The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most extraordinary and remote adventures, leading into the isolated high plateau of Upper Dolpo near the Tibetan border. This restricted area feels like a hidden world ancient monasteries, turquoise Phoksundo Lake, dramatic canyons, high passes (like Numa La and Bagala), vast arid valleys, and nomadic Dolpo people who follow a unique blend of Tibetan Buddhism and pre-Buddhist Bon traditions. With yak caravans, colorful festivals, sparse villages, and raw Himalayan scenery (including views toward Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba), it’s a trek of profound solitude, spiritual depth, and cultural richness, truly off-the-beaten-path and unlike anywhere else.
It’s a challenging, high-altitude experience with long days, rocky trails, and passes over 5,000 m, ideal for experienced trekkers seeking authenticity and wilderness.
Detailed itinerary
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to your selected hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, the remainder of the day is free to rest and recover from international travel. Depending on arrival time, you may explore the nearby streets, enjoy local cuisine, or simply relax. Overnight at a comfortable hotel.
Today is reserved for expedition preparation. You will attend a detailed trek briefing covering route highlights, safety protocols, altitude considerations, and logistics. A comprehensive equipment check ensures all personal gear meets the requirements for the remote Dolpo region. Any missing items can be rented or purchased locally. Overnight at hotel.
Fly west from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a bustling town near the Indian border. The landscape transitions from mountains to subtropical lowlands. Nepalgunj serves as a critical staging point for journeys into Dolpo and other remote Himalayan regions. Overnight at hotel.
An early morning flight brings you to Juphal, offering dramatic views of rugged hills and deep valleys. From Juphal, the trek begins with a gentle descent through terraced farmland and small villages to Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpo. Overnight at lodge.

A spectacular day as the trail climbs above cliffs to reveal the breathtaking turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake. Arrive at Ringmo village, a traditional Bon settlement overlooking the lake. The setting is one of the most iconic landscapes in Nepal. Overnight at lodge.
Leaving Phoksundo Lake behind, the route enters quieter, less-traveled terrain. The trail passes through forests and high alpine landscapes, gradually ascending to Salla Ghari, a peaceful forest camp used for acclimatization. Overnight at camp.
The trail climbs steadily into high-altitude wilderness, with expansive views of barren hills and snow-covered peaks. Kang La Base Camp is reached beneath the imposing Kang La Pass, offering a dramatic alpine environment. Overnight at camp.
An early start for the demanding crossing of Kang La Pass. From the top, enjoy sweeping views of the Dolpo plateau before descending toward Shey Gompa, one of the region’s most sacred Buddhist monasteries. Overnight at camp or lodge.

Ascending once more, the trail traverses high grazing lands and open plateaus. Khoma Gaun is a remote village with sweeping views and a strong Tibetan cultural influence. Overnight at camp.
