Upper Mustang Trek

The Upper Mustang Trek takes you into one of Nepal’s most mysterious and restricted regions. The ancient kingdom of Lo Manthang, often called the “Last Forbidden Kingdom” or a living piece of old Tibet. This high-desert plateau near the Tibetan border feels like stepping back in time: red cliffs, ancient monasteries, whitewashed mud-brick houses, chortens, prayer flags, and nomadic yak herders. You’ll explore Lo Manthang (the walled capital), Thubchen and Jampa Gompas, the royal palace, and dramatic canyons, with views toward Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Dhaulagiri peaks.

The landscape is stark and beautiful arid valleys, eroded rock formations, deep gorges, and high passes with a strong Tibetan Buddhist culture, unique festivals, and a sense of real remoteness. It’s a trek for those seeking cultural depth, history, and solitude rather than extreme mountaineering.

After breakfast, transfer to Kathmandu airport for a short scenic flight to Pokhara. The flight offers stunning views of the Himalayan ranges, including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Upon arrival in Pokhara, transfer to the hotel near Phewa Lake. The remainder of the day is free to relax, explore the lakeside area, or enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Overnight at a hotel in Pokhara.

Early in the morning, take a spectacular mountain flight to Jomsom, flying through the Kali Gandaki Gorge between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After landing, meet the trekking crew and prepare for the journey into the Mustang region. The rest of the day is spent acclimatizing and exploring the windy, desert-like landscape of Jomsom. Overnight at a lodge.

The trek officially begins after passing Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang. Following the Kali Gandaki River, the trail ascends gradually through arid terrain, ancient villages, and colorful rock formations. The influence of Tibetan culture becomes more visible as we move deeper into Mustang. After crossing several ridges and small streams, arrive at Chaile. Overnight at a local lodge.

Today’s trek involves gradual ascents and descents through rugged landscapes. The trail crosses several high ridges and passes through narrow canyons shaped by wind erosion. We pass traditional Mustang villages with whitewashed houses and prayer flags fluttering in the wind. As altitude increases, the scenery becomes more dramatic. Overnight at a lodge in Syangboche.

The trail climbs over a high pass offering panoramic views of the surrounding barren hills and deep valleys. Descending toward Ghami, we pass one of the longest mani walls in Nepal, reflecting the strong Buddhist traditions of the region. Ghami is a beautiful village set in a wide valley surrounded by cliffs and mountains. Overnight at a lodge.

The trek continues through dry landscapes and agricultural fields, crossing another high pass before descending to the village of Charang. Charang is home to an impressive monastery and a large fortress-like structure, highlighting the historical importance of the village. The afternoon is free to explore the monastery and village surroundings. Overnight at a lodge.

Today is one of the most significant days of the trek as we cross the Lo La Pass, offering the first breathtaking views of the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang. The trail gradually descends into the Lo Manthang valley. Upon arrival, explore the medieval city with its royal palace, monasteries, and narrow alleyways. Overnight at a lodge in Lo Manthang.

A full day is dedicated to exploring Lo Manthang and its surroundings. Optional excursions include visits to ancient monasteries such as Thubchen and Jampa, the royal palace, and nearby cave systems used for meditation centuries ago. This day also allows time for rest and cultural immersion. Overnight at a lodge.

Leaving Lo Manthang, the trail leads toward Ghar Gumba, one of the oldest monasteries in Mustang. The route passes through colorful rock formations and wide open landscapes. Dhakmar is famous for its striking red cliffs and dramatic scenery. Overnight at a lodge.

The trail gradually descends through arid valleys and small settlements. Along the way, enjoy views of eroded cliffs, chortens, and traditional Mustang houses. Geling is a peaceful village surrounded by cultivated fields and ancient structures. Overnight at a lodge.

Continuing south, the trail descends toward Chhuksang, following the Kali Gandaki River. The landscape slowly changes as altitude decreases, and the climate becomes slightly warmer. Chhuksang sits at the confluence of several streams and serves as a key village in the region. Overnight at a lodge.

The final trekking day follows the Kali Gandaki valley through wide riverbeds and windswept terrain. Passing Kagbeni once again, the trail continues to Jomsom. Upon arrival, celebrate the successful completion of the Upper Mustang trek. Overnight at a lodge.
