Kanchenjunga Trek via Sele La Pass

The Kanchenjunga Trek via Sele La Pass is a spectacular, remote Himalayan circuit in eastern Nepal, crossing the high Sele La Pass (4,290 m) to connect the North Base Camp (Pangpema, 5,475 m) and South Base Camp (Ramche/Oktang area, 4,610 m) of the world’s third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). This challenging route offers stunning glacier views, high alpine meadows, rhododendron forests, diverse ethnic villages (Limbu, Rai, Sherpa), and panoramas of Kanchenjunga, Jannu (Kumbhakarna), Yalung Kang, and distant Makalu. It’s a true off-the-beaten-path adventure with solitude, cultural immersion, and raw wilderness.

Detailed itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted by our airport representative and transferred to your premium hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, take time to recover from your journey and acclimate to Nepal’s vibrant capital. Depending on arrival time, you may explore the nearby streets of Thamel, known for its cultural charm and trekking heritage. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed atmosphere as you prepare mentally for the expedition ahead. Overnight at a comfortable hotel.

Today is dedicated entirely to preparation and organization. You will meet your expedition leader for a comprehensive briefing covering the trek route, altitude profile, safety protocols, acclimatization strategy, and daily logistics. A detailed equipment and gear check is conducted to ensure you are fully prepared for the remote Kanchenjunga region. Any missing items can be arranged or rented. The remainder of the day is free for rest or final personal preparations. Overnight at hotel.

Early this morning, transfer to the airport for a domestic flight to Bhadrapur in eastern Nepal. After landing, continue by private vehicle to Birtamode, passing through fertile plains, tea gardens, and rural settlements. This transition from city life to Nepal’s eastern lowlands offers a glimpse into the country’s diverse landscapes. Overnight at a hotel in Birtamode.

Today’s scenic drive takes you gradually into the Himalayan foothills. The road winds through rolling hills, rivers, and traditional villages, offering views of terraced farmland and forested slopes. As altitude increases, the air becomes cooler and fresher. Taplejung serves as the administrative gateway to the Kanchenjunga region. Overnight at a lodge.

The journey continues deeper into remote eastern Nepal. Following river valleys and rugged mountain roads, you reach Sekathum, where the trekking section begins. The surrounding landscape becomes increasingly wild and untouched. After arrival, relax and prepare for the first trekking day. Overnight at a lodge or tented camp.

Your trek officially begins today, following narrow trails along the Tamor Khola. The route includes suspension bridge crossings, waterfalls, and dense bamboo and rhododendron forests. The peaceful atmosphere and minimal foot traffic highlight the remoteness of the region. Gradual ascent leads to the small settlement of Amjilosa. Overnight at a local lodge.

Continuing upstream, the trail passes through lush forests and dramatic gorges. Traditional Tibetan-influenced villages begin to appear, reflecting the unique culture of this region. The pace remains steady, allowing proper acclimatization. Gyabla offers a tranquil overnight stop surrounded by alpine scenery. Overnight at lodge.

The trail opens into wider alpine terrain as you approach Ghunsa, the largest village in the Kanchenjunga region. Stone houses, prayer flags, and monasteries reflect strong Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Ghunsa also serves as a vital acclimatization hub for trekkers and climbers. Overnight at a well-established teahouse.

A crucial acclimatization day to allow your body to adjust to higher altitude. Optional hikes to nearby ridges or viewpoints are encouraged, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. You may explore local monasteries, interact with villagers, or simply rest. Hydration and rest are emphasized. Overnight at lodge.

The landscape becomes increasingly alpine as vegetation thins. The trail follows the river through open terrain, with stunning views of Jannu (Kumbhakarna) dominating the skyline. The air is thinner, and the pace slows accordingly. Khambachen is a small high-altitude settlement beneath towering peaks. Overnight at lodge.

Today’s trek crosses glacial moraines and barren landscapes, offering a true high-altitude Himalayan experience. Snow-capped peaks surround the route as you approach Lhonak, a remote alpine plateau near the Tibetan border. The sense of isolation and grandeur intensifies. Overnight at lodge.

An early start for a memorable excursion to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. The trail leads across rocky terrain and glacial landscapes to a dramatic viewpoint beneath the massive north face of Kanchenjunga. After spending time absorbing the views, return carefully to Lhonak for overnight rest.

Retrace your route back to Ghunsa, descending steadily. The return journey allows your body to recover from high altitude while enjoying familiar scenery from a new perspective. Overnight at lodge.

Today’s trail climbs through forests and open alpine slopes toward the Sele La Base Camp. The environment becomes quieter and more remote. The campsite sits beneath high mountain passes, preparing you for the challenging crossing ahead. Overnight at camp.

A demanding but rewarding day crossing high mountain passes. From the top, panoramic views stretch across Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and other Himalayan giants on clear days. After the pass, descend carefully to Tseram. Overnight at lodge.

The trail follows glacial valleys toward Ramche, located near Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. The landscape is dramatic, with icefalls and towering peaks surrounding the valley. Overnight at camp or lodge.

An unforgettable day hike to Oktang Temple viewpoint, offering breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga’s south face, glaciers, and surrounding peaks. After spending time at the viewpoint, return to Tseram for overnight.

Begin descending into greener landscapes as forests gradually return. The air becomes warmer, and oxygen levels increase, making the trek more relaxed. Overnight at lodge.

Today’s trek passes through terraced fields and traditional villages, marking a return to human settlements after days in alpine terrain. Yamphudin is a welcoming village and the final trekking stop. Overnight at lodge.

A full-day scenic drive back to Birtamode, transitioning from mountains to lowland plains. Overnight at hotel.
