Gokyo Trekking
The Gokyo Lake Trek is a peaceful, scenic alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp route, leading to a stunning series of turquoise glacial lakes in the Gokyo Valley. You’ll hike through Sherpa villages, rhododendron forests, yak pastures, and past the world’s highest freshwater lake system, with breathtaking views of Everest (8,848 m), Cho Oyu (8,201 m), Lhotse, Makalu, and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier. The highlight is climbing Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) for one of the best sunrise panoramas in the Himalayas often called a “must-do” viewpoint.
This trek offers quieter trails, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed pace with comfortable teahouses, making it ideal for trekkers who want stunning mountain scenery without the full EBC intensity.
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, enjoy time to rest and recover from your international journey. Depending on arrival time, you may take a short walk around the city or simply relax at the hotel. Overnight at a comfortable hotel.
This day is dedicated to final trek preparations. You will attend a comprehensive briefing covering route details, altitude safety, and logistics. An early morning flight takes you to Lukla, offering stunning views of the Himalayan landscape. After landing at the iconic mountain airstrip, the trek begins with a gentle walk through Sherpa villages, mani walls, and pine forests along the Dudh Koshi River. This short trek allows for gradual acclimatization. Overnight at a teahouse in Phakding.
The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges decorated with prayer flags. After entering Sagarmatha National Park, the route ascends steadily toward Namche Bazaar. On clear days, Mount Everest may be seen for the first time along the trail. Namche Bazaar is the vibrant commercial and cultural center of the Khumbu region. Overnight at lodge.
A crucial acclimatization day to allow your body to adapt to the altitude. A guided hike to Everest View Hotel or nearby Sherpa villages provides spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and surrounding peaks. The afternoon is free to explore Namche’s markets, bakeries, and museums or to rest and hydrate. Overnight at lodge.
Leaving the main Everest trail, the route ascends toward the quieter Gokyo Valley. The trek passes through rhododendron forests and alpine landscapes with increasing views of Cho Oyu and other Himalayan peaks. The gradual ascent helps with acclimatization as you reach the small settlement of Dole. Overnight at lodge.
Today’s trek continues steadily through high alpine terrain, following the Dudh Koshi River upstream. The landscape becomes more rugged, with expansive views of snow-capped peaks and glaciers. Machhermo is a scenic high-altitude village known for its clear mountain atmosphere. Overnight at lodge.
The trail ascends gently past yak pastures and glacial moraines, offering spectacular views of Cho Oyu, the world’s sixth-highest mountain. You pass the first of the pristine Gokyo Lakes before arriving at Gokyo Village, situated beside the third and largest lake. The turquoise waters set against dramatic Himalayan peaks create a truly unforgettable setting. Overnight at lodge.
An early morning climb to Gokyo Ri rewards you with one of the finest panoramic views in the Himalayas, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.
