Dolpo Trekking
The Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and magical journeys, taking you into the isolated Dolpo region in the far northwest, near the Tibetan border. This area feels like stepping into a hidden world – often called a real-life Shangri-La – with turquoise lakes, ancient monasteries, dramatic canyons, high passes, and vast arid plateaus. You’ll meet the Dolpo people, who follow a unique mix of Tibetan Buddhism and pre-Buddhist Bon traditions, with their own language, yak caravans, colorful festivals, and nomadic herding life. It’s peaceful, quiet, and very few trekkers come here, giving you a genuine sense of solitude and timeless Himalayan culture.
This trek offers raw wilderness beauty, spiritual depth, and authentic encounters with a way of life that has changed little over centuries perfect if you’re looking for something truly off-the-beaten-path and different from the popular routes.
Dolpa trek shot days Itinerary
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, the remainder of the day is at leisure to rest after your journey or explore the city at your own pace. Kathmandu offers a fascinating introduction to Nepal’s culture, history, and mountain heritage. Overnight at a comfortable hotel.
Today is dedicated to trek preparation and briefing. You will meet your trekking guide for a detailed orientation covering the route, daily schedule, safety procedures, and weather conditions. A thorough equipment check ensures all personal gear is suitable for the remote Dolpo region. Time is available for last-minute shopping or rental of trekking equipment. Overnight at hotel.
Take a scenic domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, located in Nepal’s western lowlands near the Indian border. The climate becomes noticeably warmer, offering a sharp contrast to Kathmandu. Nepalgunj serves as the primary gateway to Dolpo and remote western Nepal. Overnight at hotel.
An early morning flight brings you to Juphal, a dramatic mountain airstrip perched above the Thuli Bheri Valley. From Juphal, the trek begins through terraced fields and traditional villages before entering pine and walnut forests. The trail follows the Phoksundo Khola to Chhepka, a peaceful settlement nestled in forested terrain. Overnight at lodge or camp.
Today’s trek is one of the highlights of the journey. The trail climbs steadily through narrow gorges, waterfalls, and exposed cliffs carved by glacial rivers. Passing the traditional Amchi Hospital at Sanduwa, the route ascends to the spectacular Phoksundo Lake. Arrive at Ringmo village, set above the turquoise waters of Nepal’s deepest lake. Overnight at lodge or camp.
A full day is dedicated to exploration and acclimatization around Phoksundo Lake. Visit the ancient Bon monastery overlooking the lake, walk along the pristine shoreline, and hike to panoramic viewpoints above the valley. The vivid blue waters of the lake, surrounded by barren cliffs and snow-dusted peaks, create one of the most striking landscapes in the Himalaya. Overnight at Ringmo.
Begin descending from Ringmo, retracing the route through dramatic landscapes and narrow trails. The descent offers new perspectives of the gorge and surrounding cliffs. Passing Rechi, the trail continues through forested sections before reaching Chhepka once again. Overnight at lodge or camp.
The final trekking day follows the river valley back toward Juphal. The trail passes cultivated fields, suspension bridges, and small villages, gradually descending into warmer terrain. Upon arrival in Juphal, enjoy a relaxed evening reflecting on the journey through one of Nepal’s most remote regions. Overnight at lodge.
Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj in the morning, followed by a connecting flight back to Kathmandu. Transfer to your hotel upon arrival. The evening is free for rest, shopping, or a celebratory dinner. Overnight at hotel.
A free day in Kathmandu for rest and recovery. Optional activities include guided sightseeing tours, spa treatments, souvenir shopping, or simply relaxing at the hotel. This day also serves as a buffer for any potential flight delays from Dolpo. Overnight at hotel.
