Rolwaling Valley Trek
The Rolwaling Valley Trek is one of those hidden gems in Nepal that still feels truly wild and untouched. Tucked between Langtang and Everest, this remote valley is often nicknamed the “Valley of Flowers” because of the incredible rhododendron forests that explode in color during spring. You walk through traditional Sherpa and Tamang villages, past terraced fields, thick pine and rhododendron woods, and up into open alpine meadows with jaw-dropping views of Gaurishankar (7,134 m), Melungtse (7,023 m), and the massive Rolwaling Glacier.
The highlight for most people is reaching the stunning turquoise Tsho Rolpa Lake at 4,588 m, Nepal’s biggest glacial lake, sitting right below hanging glaciers and towering peaks. The trek gives you that rare sense of solitude, genuine cultural encounters, and raw mountain scenery without the crowds of more famous routes.
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, take time to rest and recover from your international journey. Kathmandu’s vibrant atmosphere, rich culture, and Himalayan heritage offer an exciting introduction to Nepal. Depending on your arrival time, light exploration of the surrounding area is possible. Overnight at a comfortable hotel.
This day is reserved for rest, preparation, and final logistics. You will meet your trekking guide for a detailed briefing covering the itinerary, safety procedures, and acclimatization plan. A thorough gear and equipment check ensures you are fully prepared for the Rolwaling Valley trek. Any last-minute purchases or rentals can be arranged in Kathmandu. The remainder of the day is free to relax. Overnight at hotel.
After an early breakfast, begin a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Chetchet, passing through rural villages, terraced farmland, and river valleys. Upon arrival, the trek begins with a steady uphill walk to Simigaon, a traditional Sherpa village perched above the Rolwaling Khola. The trail offers the first views of the surrounding Himalayan foothills. Overnight at a teahouse.
Today’s trek continues through dense forests of rhododendron, pine, and oak. The trail ascends gradually along the Rolwaling River, passing waterfalls and alpine vegetation. As altitude increases, the environment becomes quieter and more remote. Kyalche is a small settlement surrounded by forested slopes and towering ridgelines. Overnight at a lodge.
The landscape opens into a broad alpine valley as you move deeper into the Rolwaling region. The trail follows glacial streams with dramatic mountain scenery unfolding ahead. Beding is the largest settlement in the valley, home to a Tibetan-influenced Sherpa community. Stunning views of Gauri Shankar and surrounding peaks dominate the skyline. Overnight at lodge.
A crucial acclimatization day to allow your body to adapt to the increasing altitude. Optional hikes to nearby ridges and viewpoints are encouraged following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. You may explore the village, visit the local monastery, or rest and enjoy the dramatic mountain surroundings. Proper hydration and rest are emphasized. Overnight at lodge.
Today’s trek leads further into high alpine terrain as vegetation becomes sparse. The trail follows the valley floor, offering expansive views of glaciers, icefalls, and surrounding peaks. Na is a seasonal settlement used by yak herders and trekkers. The remoteness and silence of this high-altitude environment highlight the raw beauty of the Rolwaling Valley. Overnight at lodge.
An early start for a spectacular excursion to Tsho Rolpa, one of Nepal’s largest and most dramatic glacial lakes. The turquoise waters are framed by massive ice walls and snow-covered peaks, creating a truly unforgettable setting. After spending time at the lake and enjoying panoramic views, return to Na for overnight rest.
Begin the descent from the high valley back toward lower elevations. As altitude decreases, oxygen levels improve and the trek becomes more relaxed. The trail retraces familiar paths through alpine meadows and forested sections. Dongang provides a peaceful overnight stop surrounded by greenery. Overnight at lodge.
Continue descending through lush forests and terraced landscapes, passing small villages along the way. The return journey offers a different perspective of the valley, with warmer temperatures and richer vegetation. Arrive at Chetchet by late afternoon and rest after completing the trekking portion of the journey. Overnight at lodge.
After breakfast, begin the drive back to Kathmandu. The scenic journey passes rivers, hills, and rural settlements before re-entering the Kathmandu Valley. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the comfort of city life once again. The evening is free for relaxation or optional cultural activities. Overnight at hotel.
Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward international flight. This marks the conclusion of an unforgettable trek into the remote and spectacular Rolwaling Valley.
